English: Doyle Brunson in 2010

Doyle Brunson – Poker Legend

Doyle Brunson, “The Godfather of Poker” and Poker legend is now 78, he was born on the 10th August, 1933 and has been playing poker professionally for over 50 years.  He is a two-time World Series of Poker Main Event champion, a Poker Hall of Fame inductee, and the author of several books on poker.

Doyle Brunson was born in Longworth, Fisher County, Texas, and a town with a population of about 100, and was one of three children. A promising athlete, Doyle was part of the All-State Texas basketball team, and practiced the one-mile run to keep him-self in shape in the off-season.

A knee injury ended his basketball playing days, when he broke his leg in two places and was in a cast for two years, his leg never healed properly and he still uses a crutch today. With this twist of fate Brunson changed his focus from athletics to education; Doyle attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1954 and a master’s degree in administrative education the following year.

Brunson had started playing poker before his injury, he would play five-card draw and found it “easy.” He played more often after being injured and his winnings paid for his living expenses.

After graduating, he took a job as a business machine salesman, on his first day at his new job, he was invited to play in a seven-card stud game and earned over a month’s salary in less than three hours!  He soon left his job to become became a professional poker player.

Brunson married his wife Louise in August 1962.  Louise fell pregnant but then that same year life took a turn for the worse in when he was diagnosed with cancer and given a mere three months left to live. Doyle Brunson beat the odds and recovered with no trace of cancer to be found.

10 Time WSOP Champion – Brunson was the first player to earn $1 million in poker tournaments and has won ten World Series of Poker bracelets throughout his career; he tied with Johnny Chan for second all-time, three behind Phil Hellmuth’s thirteen. He is also one of only four players to have won the Main Event at the World Series of Poker multiple times, which he did in 1976 and 1977. Doyle Brunson is one of only two players, along with Bill Boyd, to have won bracelets at the WSOP in four consecutive years. In addition to this, he is the first of five players to win both the WSOP Main Event and a World Poker Tour title. In 2006, Bluff Magazine voted Doyle the most influential force in the world of poker.

He was the star of the infamous band of traveling poker sharks, the Texas Rounders. Brunson began by playing in illegal games on Exchange Street, Fort Worth, Texas with a friend named Dwayne Hamilton. Eventually, they began traveling around Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, playing in bigger poker games, and meeting fellow professionals Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts. The illegal games Doyle Brunson played in during this time were usually run by criminals who were often members of organized crime, so rules were not always enforced. Brunson has admitted to having a gun pulled on him several times and that he was also robbed and beaten up.

Brunson finally settled in Las Vegas. He has been a regular player at the World Series of Poker, since its creation in 1970. He has played in the Main Event nearly every year since then.

Play Poker online Brunson authored the book “Super System”, which is considered to be one of the most authoritative books on poker.
Originally self-published in 1978, Super System was the book that transformed poker by giving ordinary players insight into the way that professionals such as Brunson played and won, so much so that Brunson believes that it has cost him a lot of money. An updated revision, Super System 2, was published in 2004. Brunson is also the author of “Poker Wisdom of a Champion”, originally published according to Doyle by Lyle Stuart in 1984.

Brunson continues to play in the biggest poker games in the world, including a $4000/$8000 limit mixed poker game in “Bobby’s Room” at the Bellagio. He also still plays in many of the biggest poker tournaments around the world. He won his ninth gold bracelet in a mixed games event in 2003, and in 2004, he finished 53rd (in a field of 2,576) in the No Limit Texas hold ‘em Championship event. He won the Legends of Poker World Poker Tour event in 2004 (garnering him a $1.1 million prize) and finished fourth in the WPT’s first championship event. Early in the morning on July 1, 2005, less than a week after Chan had won his 10th gold bracelet, setting a new record; Brunson tied the record at the 2005 WSOP. He is currently three bracelets behind Phil Hellmuth, who earned his 13th bracelet at the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe.

Doyle Brunson’s nickname, “Texas Dolly,”came from a mistake made by Jimmy Snyder. Snyder was supposed to announce Doyle Brunson as “Texas Doyle,” but incorrectly pronounced “Doyle” and said “Texas Dolly”  … this slip of the tongue stuck and now many of Doyle’s poker colleagues simply call him “Dolly”.

SOCCER BANNED ?  YOU BET IT WAS  …… Most modern versions of  Soccer or football are believed to have originated from England in the twelfth century. The game became so popular in England that the kings of that time namely King Henry II and King Henry IV actually banned it !

These two kings were actually wise beyond thier time as Soccer has become the most popular sport in the world.

You have Players that are loved, teams that are revered, goals, dribbles and sprints. Huge crowds, chanting, cheering, singing and yes, sometimes even fighting. Mind boggling sums of money change hands for the purchase of Soccer Clubs, Soccer Players, Soccer Sponsorships and Soccer bets.

Annie Duke – Lady of Poker

Annie Duke - famous lady poker player

Annie Duke – fame through poker

When it comes to women making money in the game of poker, Annie Duke is one of the best in the business.

Annie Duke (Anne LaBarr Lederer) born September 13, 1965 grew up in a card-playing household in New Hampshire, Annie learned to play poker with her family and then followed her brother Howard Lederer into a pro poker career after giving up her doctorate research at the University of Pennsylvania to get married and moved to Montana. The move to Montana proved to be very harsh on the Dukes, as they often found themselves teetering on the poverty line. Annie decided to venture into the Billings back room poker games, she was a young girl sitting in amidst a sea of testosterone. Assisted with a bankroll from her now professional poker-playing big brother, Annie was able to put in long hours on the felt and became a great poker player in the process. In a relatively short time the young couple’s financial problems were a thing of the past.

Annie’s brother then suggested she take on the World Series of Poker in 1994. It turned out to be a winning proposition as she cashed in on four events, one of which was a final-table finish and the other was the Main Event. The Dukes decided to make the move to Las Vegas in the same year.

Annie has since then accumulated millions of dollars in tournament cashes, a WSOP bracelet win 2004 along with winning the WSOP Tournament of Champions event that same year, and several World PokerTour cashes.

Annie is a mother of four, Maud, Leo, Lucy and Nelly. Annie and Ben divorced in 2004, and Annie moved to Los Angeles with her children. Annie now lives with her boyfriend, actor, producer and poker junkie, fiancée, Joe Reitman. Annie has stated that her ambition in life is “to be the best mom she can be, while still managing a poker career.”

Annie is also author of the book; Annie Duke: How I Raised, Folded, Bluffed, Flirted, Cursed and Won Millions at the World Series of Poker.

“Poker is one of the only sports where a woman can compete on a totally equal footing with a man,” said Annie. Any doubters of her claim were nearly forced to eat their hats after Duke narrowly missed the 2000 main event final table while eight months pregnant. To this day, she refuses to enter any of the women-only events, choosing instead to drag pots in male dominated games.

Annie uses her poker ability and experience to teach others the game as well.

Annie has coached stars like Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Ashton Kutcher on their poker game.

As one of the top female players in the game, Duke’s celebrity profile grew substantially outside of the poker realm as well.  In 2009 she starred on Celebrity Apprentice. Annie played the boardroom game well enough to make it into the final against Joan Rivers but fell just short of winning, coming second. During the show she raised more than $700,000 for Refugees International. She uses her celebrity status to raise money for that and other organizations that help aid humanitarian efforts in Darfur as well with her Ante Up for Africa Celebrity Charity Poker Tournament in Las Vegas during the WSOP each year. She co-created the tournament with Don Cheadle. Duke has also helped with fundraising efforts for Children’s Hospital and other charities.

Annie Duke - Lady of Poker

Annie Duke – Lady of Poker

In recent year’s Annie has had it pretty tough, Annie made the following comments at a speech she gave at the Women in Poker Hall of Fame dinner in 2011;

“2011 has been a tumultuous year for the poker industry, to say the least. Last year when Jeffrey [Pollack] spoke about a change in the poker industry I am pretty sure he was not foretelling the government shutdown of online poker on Black Friday. Our industry has been deeply affected by Black Friday as everyone has been forced into a position of self-examination, a redefinition of who and what we are and what we do to achieve success and excellence in poker”

“For myself, I was forced into a personal re-examination this spring because of an event that happened just prior to Black Friday: the death of my mother. Her death, not surprisingly, triggered a lot of deep thinking about my priorities in life, my life with her and the deep impact and influence she had on me. There was a sort of strange beauty for me in the symmetry of working to be a part of the redefinition of poker, through my work at Epic, and the redefinition of myself as I have gone through this difficult personal journey”.

From 2011-2012 Annie was co-founder, executive vice president, and commissioner of the Epic Poker League until it filed for bankruptcy on February 28, 2012. Despite her accomplishments with some ventures, her foray into running a casino-based poker tour, the Epic Poker League, was unsuccessful. Epic Poker folded in its first season and never ran its planned $1 million free roll for its players.

Annie has kept a pretty low-key since the traumatic events at the beginning of 2012. The World Series of Poker bracelet winner has received some harsh criticism and vitriol on social media from some members of the poker community for her part in the Epic saga.

With more than 41,000 twitter followers, Annie Duke, has one of the larger social media followings among poker players.
