Sir Abraham (Abe) Bailey (1864 – 1940)
Born in Cradock in the Cape Province of South Africa in 1864 he was the son of a general dealer and liquor merchant in Queenstown. Abe was enticed by the stories of great fortunes to be made from gold mining and he moved to Barberton in 1886. By 1894 he was head of the Bailey Group of gold mines, by the thirties had become one of the worlds richest men.
He unashamedly confessed to his love of gambling, on horses or indeed on anything, provided it was on a large, daring scale:
“All my life I have been a gambler. I have not in mind the meaningless habit of putting a pound or two on a horse and waiting for a jockey to pull it first past the post. That’s just feeble fumbling with fate. I mean going all out on something which may yield big returns in life – love, politics, everything that touches human activities: but always be guided by a sound knowledge of what is possible (even though seemingly in the realm of the miraculous), and what is not possible. The chances against success may be terrifying, but if you have got the gambler’s instinct, the more nearly they are terrifying, the more fascinating they become. That is your gambler.”
