The History of Golf

The history of golf is interesting and in fact, golf in a form has been around since Roman times. Who actually came up with the game is not known, but it is believed the modern game of golf evolved in Scotland in the Middle Ages. Golf was originally played without greens and holes were just open depths in the ground. Golf was played wherever there was an area that was flat enough. Grass was not kept meticulously short, and the holes were very simply designed. 

The first golf clubs were actually made by craftsmen who previously made bows and arrows for war. The clubs were carved of holly, beech, dogwood, apple, or pear and the shafts were made with hazel or ash which allowed the club to "whip" better when swung. 

The first golf balls were made of hand stitched leather and stuffed with boiled chicken or duck feathers. In the mid 1800s the balls started being made from gutta-percha (a natural rubbery substance) and the modern ball as we know it today made it's appearance in 1932.

Golf PGA Major Events

Golf is full of major events. All in all there are four events every year that are classified as “Majors”. There are also some other large events that get a lot of exposure and are great for betting purposes.

The Masters:	This golf tournament is the first of the four “major” tournaments on the PGA schedule each and every year. The Masters is schedule for the first week of April and is held at Augusta National Golf Club each and every year.
